Find Out The Truth To Social Security Disability Myths

At the Rome law firm of Davis, Davis & Patterson, we assist clients throughout North Georgia with disability claims. With more than 80 years of combined experience, our attorneys are very familiar with Social Security Disability myths. Here are just a few:

  • My claim was denied, so I'm simply out of luck. This is not true. Most initial applications are denied, but that doesn't mean you should give up. Our law firm has helped thousands of clients throughout Georgia to appeal denied claims.
  • SSDI and SSI are the same thing. Not true. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) requires you to have paid in a certain amount to the Social Security system, through taxes deducted from your paychecks over the years. Supplemental Security Income (SSI), on the other hand, can provide benefits to qualifying, low-income individuals who have never paid in anything.
  • I should be able to get SSI benefits while I'm waiting for a decision on my SSDI case. Simply put, this is not true. An SSI claim also requires a favorable decision on the issue of disability. You will not be eligible for any money from the Social Security Administration until your case is decided favorably.
  • I don't have quadriplegia or brain damage, for instance, so I'm not disabled. You don't have to have a well-known type of disability to qualify for benefits. If for any reason you aren't capable of working 40 hours a week at any type of job, you may have a case. Back pain, depression and other issues can all keep a person from working, even if they don't sound like extremely serious conditions.
